enGen brings new services to health plans and providers
Founded in 2014, enGen delivers a dynamic ecosystem of smart automation and technology that supports and streamlines complex operations for health plans and their provider partners. A wholly owned healthtech subsidiary of Highmark Health, the company employs more than 11,000 people and helps Blues and non-Blues deliver high-quality services to more than 20 million members.
Chris Cowman, Vice President of Strategy Transformation at enGen, says: “We sit at the intersection of the payer and provider, which gives us a unique opportunity to develop products for a wide range of stakeholders. The ultimate aim is to find innovative ways of connecting plans, providers and members, and to empower people to play a greater role in their own care.”
To bring together all the core capabilities that its clients need to shape competitive offerings, enGen has relied for many years on Axway solutions. Using Amplify API Management, the company created a self-service catalog of API information for thousands of developers across the organization.
Chris Hengst, Lead Enterprise API Architect/Evangelist at enGen, elaborates: “Our API architecture has enabled us to offer sales, marketing, claims management, billing systems and more to a growing number of clients. In the past, we relied on manual processes to track API usage and calculate the monthly billing for each client. As our user community grew, we aimed to enhance the experience for API consumers by streamlining and automating this process.”
enGen also works closely with Axway to facilitate the secure exchange of data with internal teams and external partners. With Axway SecureTransport, the company helps ensure that key processes such as health plan enrollment and claims run reliably and smoothly.
Robert Sweigart, Director of Product & Technology Solutions at enGen, continues: “In recent years, a significant number of our clients have started moving to the cloud. To deliver on these emerging requirements, we were also looking for an efficient way to deliver managed file transfer [MFT] capabilities for public cloud services.”
Streamlining API monetization
enGen decided to build on its longstanding partnership with Axway to evolve and enhance its API capabilities. By moving to Amplify Engage, the company can link its API products into business-focused services with built-in monetization capabilities.
“Amplify Engage was the ideal fit for our monetization goals, and we knew we wanted to be an early adopter,” says Hengst. “Axway worked side-by-side with us from the very start, setting up biweekly meetings with their product team to allow us to ask questions and understand newly released features.”
Embracing an API product mindset
In partnership with Axway, enGen is preparing to migrate its existing APIs from Amplify API Management to Amplify Engage, which will then become the single point of consumption for all API products. During this process, Axway will help the company to reconfigure existing APIs into business services with rate-based subscriptions.
“Our first objective is to bring our 1,000 APIs onto the new platform,” says Hengst. “Next, we will rearchitect them with an API-product mindset — grouping appropriate APIs together in ways that make the most sense for client consumption.”
Building future-ready MFT capabilities
enGen is also deepening its collaboration with Axway in the MFT domain. By augmenting SecureTransport with Axway Transfer CFT, Axway Flow Manager and Axway Sentinel, the company can integrate with any cloud or on-premises location while strengthening visibility, security, and efficiency for more than 2.8 million file transfers a month.
Devon McKernan, Manager – Data Transformation Solutions at enGen, says: “Although we only got started with Axway Transfer CFT recently, the solution is already simplifying the process of supporting cloud transfers for our internal stakeholders. With Axway Flow Manager, we can replace manual scheduling with automated file transfer patterns, saving a great deal of manual work.”
Tammy Hetrick, Senior Product Owner – Data Transformation Solutions at enGen, adds: “We’re currently using reports from Axway Sentinel to identify virus scan failures and determine whether a genuine issue exists. We can also generate reports that distinguish between custom and standard file formats for outbound files, which provide valuable insights to the business.”
Fostering closer relationships
With Amplify Engage, enGen will have the ability to build ever-closer relationships with health plans and payers across the country.
Hengst says: “In the future, we will be able to offer tailored API pricing plans for our clients and automatically deliver transparent consumption data every month. As well as improving the experience for our clients, this approach will save substantial time on manual, spreadsheet based work.”
Accelerating API access
Looking ahead, enGen is confident that Amplify Engage will deliver additional benefits. When clients request access to a new API, the company’s identity and access management team manually sends credentials via email. With Amplify Engage, enGen will be able to automate this process — cutting the time to access API products from days to seconds.
“Amplify Engage is also going to allow us to provide even better documentation and onboarding instructions for our API products,” adds Hengst. “We’re even going to use generative AI to help us create that documentation, which will help us cut time to market for our services further still.”
Expanding the partnership
As it continues its business growth journey, enGen sees Axway as a key partner. Today, enGen is working with Axway to move its first client onto Amplify Engage, and the company wants to expand the collaboration as the deployment project progresses.
“Over the years, Axway has been there to provide support whenever we’ve needed it,” comments Hengst.
“We worked with Axway Solution Health Assessment Services to help us validate our original API management platform and identify opportunities for optimization. We plan to use these services again for Amplify Engage.”
Through its partnership with Axway, enGen is building the capabilities it needs to exchange data securely and reliably and bring its API products to a wider market.
“Building a strong partner ecosystem will be vital to achieve our business growth goals, and Axway is a key partner for enGen,” concludes Cowman. “With Axway, we’re building solutions at scale that will help us deliver greater value to health plans and providers.”
